Jul Sail Away to Shelter Island

Relax, hike, walk the beaches, and kayak all on Shelter Island this summer. Warm weather means it’s the perfect time for outdoor fun on this secluded island. You can reach Shelter Island via ferry from Greenport to the north (approximately 8-minute trip) or from North Haven to the south (approximately 5-minute trip). Beaches

There are three official town beaches that run the span of Shelter Island’s coastline: Wades Beach, Crescent Beach, and Shell Beach. Crescent Beach, also nicknamed as Sunset Beach, is known as an idyllic, hip spot for weekenders escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, rest their heads on the sand, and take in some rays The Sunset Hotel is just a five minute walk away this beach and it’s a great place for lunch or dinner after your day in the sun.

Hiking

If you’re looking to be one with nature, then take a hike. The island boasts several peaceful wooded trails such as Mashomack Preserve, Ram Island, Sylvestor Manor, Sachem’s Woods, and Coecles Harbor Marine Trail. Here you can take in the sounds of nature and really explore the island.

Local Breweries

Beer lovers, rejoice! Shelter Island is home to the Shelter Island Craft Brewery. Inspired by the natural beauty on the island this brewery launched with a focus on creating small-batch, hand-crafted beer. Sports

Tennis players will feel at home here, too. Bring your racket and hit the courts at the Shelter Island Tennis Club. The family-oriented tennis club is dedicated to teaching adults and children the love and skills of tennis and fitness. In addition to their original location, at the Pridwin Hotel, overlooking Peconic Bay, they also manage the courts at the Dering Harbor Inn and at the Shelter Island Heights clay courts near the North Ferry. The Shelter Island Tennis Club will be offering three new tennis clinic classes for 2017: Hardcore Tennis, Sunset Tennis, and Drill & Play. Head over to Shelter Island Kayak Tours for adventures along Shelter Island’s calm, protected creeks and harbors.
