Oct Get Ready for Taste North Fork 2014!

For those of us who live on Long Island’s East End, having a car isn’t something we even think twice about. Long Islanders drive pretty much everywhere—to the store, to work, to school—but on the East End it’s especially necessary because of our expansive farmland and vineyards.

Did you know that Manhattan has the highest percentage of non-car households in the entire country? More than 55% of Manhattanites don’t have cars, and rely on public transportation, bikes, and their own two feet to get around. While that’s a totally understandable option in the city, it doesn’t quite cut it out here in Long Island Wine Country.

So what’s a city-family to do when they want to head out East to take advantage of all we have to offer if they don’t have a car?

Taste North Fork is the solution to that very problem. The festival is returning to the East End this year on Veteran’s Day Weekend, with a long list of local participants to showcase everything about the East End scene that makes us so special.

On November 8 and 9, folks can hop aboard the Hampton Jitney’s I Love New York bus at one of several pick-up points in Manhattan (86th St between 3rd & Lex. Ave; Lex Ave between 68th & 69th; Lex. Ave between 59th & 60th; SW corner of 44th & 3rd Ave) and head out to the North Fork for just $38 round trip! Visitors can also take the LIRR out to the North Fork, as well. The I Love NY bus will drop visitors off at either Tanger, Mattituck, or Peconic.

From noon to 5:30PM, the Taste North Fork FREE shuttle service will be making stops along three loop-routes: from Tanger II in Riverhead to the Bay View Farm and Market in Aquabogue; from Bay View to Peconic Lane in Peconic; and from Peconic to Greenport. The shuttle will also be making stops at the Mattituck and Greenport Long Island Rail Road stations, as well as the Cross Sound Ferry terminal in Orient. The shuttle busses will run every 30 minutes on both days of the festival.

The Long Island Wine Council, which is organizing the event, expects there to be 119 North Fork businesses participating this year. Last year, there were about 1,000 people who participated in the three-day event, and the Council is confident that this year will be even bigger and better.

A new addition to Taste North Fork this year is a brewery tour through Riverhead, offering $1 off tastings at Moustache Brewing Co., Long Ireland Beer Co., Crooked Ladder Brewing Co., and Vines and Hops Café. This is a particularly exciting opportunity, as our community’s been getting a ton of press lately for the abundance of local breweries that have been popping up throughout the East End (and you know how much we love nice, cold pints of local beer at Bistro 72!).

Every participant in Taste North Fork is offering specials and deals for visitors from both near and far, so it’s a great time to come out for the weekend and enjoy our beautiful region. For a full list of participants and special offers, as well as transportation details and schedules, head over to East End Getaways.
